Maine Arts Commission Launches Creative Communities Grant to Support Local Arts and Culture

The Maine Arts Commission (MAC) proudly announces the launch of the Creative Communities Grant, designed to support arts and cultural projects that serve Maine’s communities. This new initiative aims to bolster community-driven, arts-based programs that enhance livability, economic development, and community connection. With a focus on creative placemaking, these projects will help build vibrant and inclusive communities through arts integration.

As part of MAC's recently published five-year Strategic Plan, this grant is a direct response to feedback from artists and organizations, which highlighted the need for support in honing community-building practices. The plan also emphasized the importance of making art accessible to the public and preserving Maine’s cultural identity.

Through multiple conversations, MAC learned that to keep arts relevant, communities need consistent engagement and fresh programming. The Creative Communities Grant is designed to provide financial support to organizations and artists working to foster this engagement, especially in historically under-resourced communities. By offering these grants, MAC can promote cultural exchange, inspire creativity, and encourage innovative placemaking projects across Maine.

Eligible applicants include cultural organizations, schools, municipalities, and tribal entities. Applicants may receive up to $7,000 in funding, with a 1-to-1 matching requirement.

Grant applications will open on February 12, 2025, and close on March 19, 2025. MAC encourages applications from historically underrepresented communities, ensuring equitable access to the arts.
