Augusta, ME – The Maine Arts Commission is proud to announce that an exhibition of artwork by Maine landscape artist Brian Krebs will be on display until the end of August in Maine’s Capitol Complex as part of the agency’s Arts in the Capitol program.

Those who visit and work in the Capitol will be able to experience the way in which Krebs employs various layers of geometric abstraction to achieve a sense of realism that has developed over the years into a colorful and striking vision of the Maine landscape.

"Just as a symphony has mathematics woven into its composition, I value geometry in the design and composition of my paintings,” said Krebs. “I am a realist focused on natural landscapes and water views and am especially intrigued by instances when a two dimensional representation of a subject can be overlaid with geometric forms. My work is informed by shapes, patterns and proportions that we are intuitively attracted to. I apply oil paint very deliberately and with a palette knife, embracing its limitation of marks while emphasizing perspective and light."

Krebs, who lives in Warren, earned a bachelor's degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where he studied philosophy and mathematics. His work has been exhibited throughout the midcoast and is included in many collections locally and abroad.

“The Maine Arts Commission is delighted to be hosting this exhibition of Krebs's work,” said Julie Richard, Executive Director of the Maine Arts Commission. “His technique and use of geometry results in a unique and engaging view of Maine’s landscape, which in turn brings life and vibrancy to the Capitol Building."

The exhibit will remain on display until the end of August 2013. All Arts in the Capitol events and free and open to the public; however, exhibitions are self-guided and may only be viewed within prescribed times: Maine Arts Commission Office 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and at the Maine State House 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
