The word "seen" often connotes visibility. Yet, it also evokes the age-old proverb "Children should be seen and not heard," a phrase historically used to silence diverse communities, perpetuating a culture where visibility is valued over voice. We refuse to uphold this antiquated notion and instead seek to delve into what it truly means to be SEEN in society while being denied a voice. Our project aims to spotlight the detrimental impact of this phenomenon on marginalized communities, including Black and Hispanic individuals, people with disabilities (visible and invisible), and those who identify as anything other than society's perceived "normal."

We invite artists to submit works that contemplate this theme and ignite meaningful discussions about the importance of being seen and heard in every facet of life. Whether through traditional or digital mediums, we encourage you to employ your artistic talent to challenge societal norms and advocate for inclusivity and equality.

Submissions will be reviewed by co-curators, Athena Lynch and Candice Gosta between June 3-14, 2025. Artists will be selected based on artistic excellence and response to the exhibition proposal. Artists will be notified by 5 PM on June 14, 2025. Submissions not selected may be kept on file for future exhibition opportunities.
