(Rockland ME) July 21, 2016 – Michael Good Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Fred Good at the 499 Main Street location. The show of abstract paintings and works on paper launches during the gallery’s 17 Annual Summer Celebration on Friday, August 5, 2016, and runs through September 9. The event is free and open to the public.

“I’ve been interested in spontaneity, both as it is manifested in nature and in the behavior of people,” Stated Fred Good.  “My paintings are a visual manifestation of this interest which was inspired by my fascination with the Abstract Expressionism movement in painting and with psychodrama and group therapy in psychology. The current work is a continuation of my experimentation with the watercolor medium in the AE tradition.”

“If it’s August, it must be time for our Annual Summer Celebration, and this year Fred Good is in the spotlight,” confirmed Avi Good, Gallery Manager. “This special solo show will fill our Main Street gallery with the color and energy so typical of Fred Good’s current bold work. Look for a great show from a man named Good.”

Since the 1960s, developments in the New York City art scene and social/cultural movements have deeply impacted Fred (Frederic W.) Good. While studying at seminal art centers and mentoring with psychology pioneers, he placed himself in the middle of New York City’s Lower East Side as a key – and highly successful -- community organizer. In what came to be known as “Loisaida”(a name given to Avenue C and northern NYC’s Lower East Side), Good participated in exhibits, poetry readings and musical events at the legendary Nuyorican Café on East 6 Street. He fostered the development of the Seven Loaves Art Coalition and the Lower East Side Community Music Workshop. Over time Good raised a million dollars in grant money for projects focused on children and education, visual and performing arts, and social issues particular to residents of the Lower East Side. His NYC career and its impact have been discussed in numerous journals, newspapers and books, including the NY Times, Life Magazine and Readers’ Digest. After moving to North Carolina with his family in the 1980s, he founded New View Publications, a publishing and training company and a leading advocate in counseling and education of the scientific behavioral theory known as Perceptual Control Theory (PCT). Fred Good lives in Chapel Hill NC with his wife, and author, speaker and workshop leader. They have one daughter and two grandsons.

Fred Good studied at the Art Students League in NYC and at several art education centers in North Carolina. He has exhibited extensively in Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill and elsewhere, as a solo artist and in juried exhibitions. His numerous citations include a North Carolina Governor’s Award. He has been a watercolor instructor, and served nonprofit groups as board President, Chairman, and Treasurer. Good is fluent in French, writes poetry and song lyrics and plays the guitar; he has traveled the globe extensively.

The Good exhibition opens during the August edition of Rockland’s First Friday ArtWalk. Each year, Michael Good Gallery hosts an Annual Summer Celebration in August, from 5-8pm. Complimentary refreshments will be served, and musical accompaniment by Kristen Tescher on (instrument) completes the event.
