WALDOBORO, Maine — This summer, Open House of History (OHOH) presents Entering the Feelscape of Time, a large-scale immersive installation by Jan Arabas and Michael Amico exploring the emotional forces that shape everyday life in Maine across time.

Presented as part of Emotional Currents: Between Survival and Freedom, the installation transforms the upper level of the Waldoboro Custom House into a multi-sensory environment of sound, moving imagery, drawings, environmental materials, and local voices. Running June 19 through August 16, the exhibition invites visitors into a space of contemplation, recognition, and emotional engagement rooted in the lived realities of coastal Maine.

Drawing on the experiences of lobstermen, shellfish harvesters, and community scientists, the installation explores uncertainty, labor, cooperation, and resilience within a deeper space of history. Visitors are asked to consider how emotions such as fear, hope, pride, grief, resentment, and care shape the atmosphere of a town and the rhythms of a community.

“At a moment when many people feel isolated, overwhelmed, or divided, we wanted to create a space where people could encounter one another differently,” said Michael Amico, director of OHOH. “This project invites people to slow down, listen, and recognize the deeper emotional realities moving through everyday life in Maine and connecting us across time.”

Artist Jan Arabas was able to develop part of the installation with a Project Grant from the Maine Arts Commission.

The exhibition is housed within the Waldoboro Custom House, built in 1855 when Waldoboro stood at the head of the region’s shipbuilding economy. Originally serving as the administrative center for a customs district stretching from the Damariscotta River to Penobscot Bay, the building later became the town post office and library.

All events are free and open to the public. Regular open hours are Wednesday through Friday from 3–7 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11 am–3 pm.
