(prerequisite - Color Theory I)

This class is about expanding and solidifying additional knowledge relevant to painting, practice, and process. Color Theory II is the intermediate level on which more color behavior information is introduced. In order to build harmony in color relationships in a painting, specific assignments are given while we use panels and brushes, experiment with an expanded palette, try out driers, and discover new ways to put paint to canvas. This class is focused on working from direct observation and weekly critiques remain central in each session.

FOCUS

• Using brushes and various substrates

• Understanding color harmonies

• Solidifying a work practice by painting everyday

• Learning how to build from a neutral

• Incorporating drawing into the process

• Expanding the palette

• Finding a personal direction - your individual statement

• Painting from real life

• Translating observations into color relationships

About the instructor: “ I’m drawn to various subjects and materials as a painter of the land and life in Maine; my palette imitates the seasonally shifting behaviors of the terrain in and around Waldo County. The paintings are an expression of color in some sort of balance that feels connected to daily routines and seasonal shifts. The role of the ‘story’ is minimized - attention is directed past what is going on in the painting toward how things relate visually to each other. The work is about color behavior and the arrangement of information; images are manipulated until a certain light condition is struck and a sense of territory is explained.”

Kris received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from the Maine College of Art. Since 2003, until 2023, she taught in the University of Maine Art Department, JanPlans at Colby College, and was Visiting Assistant Professor at Colby for the 2022-23 academic year.
