nibezun is hosting its first ever powwow on Saturday September 19th, 2026. The Seed to Spirit powwow is open to all, celebrating Wabanaki arts, community, and 10 years of nibezun. The powwow is an outdoor event; attendees are welcome to camp out respectfully on the land at nibezun overnight on the 18th and 19th. A powwow at nibezun is especially significant because powwows rarely take place in this region of Maine, providing an opportunity for local community members to experience a powwow and fostering a greater sense of connection and community.

Powwows are vibrant cultural gatherings that bring Indigenous communities and allied communities together to honor and celebrate Indigenous traditions, communities, art, music, dance, food, intergenerational connection, and nature. Through this event, nibezun strives to create a welcoming space where culture is shared, relationships are strengthened, and traditions continue to thrive for future generations. Drumming, singing, and dancing create a shared experience rooted in healing, identity, and community pride. Powwows uplift local Indigenous community members, such as artists, dancers, musicians, chefs, and other knowledge carriers as vendors and exhibitors. Artists share traditional and contemporary works featuring mediums such as beadwork, basketry, carving, textiles, and jewelry, supporting cultural economies and sustaining artistic practices.

By bringing together families, artists, and cultural knowledge carriers, powwows serves not only as celebrations of Indigenous culture, but also as an investment in cultural preservation, arts, education, community health, and the continued vitality of Indigenous traditions in Maine and beyond.
