The L.C. Bates Museum Gift of the Glacier: The Maine Landscape Collaborative Art Exhibition
- Date: May 15, 2013 - October 15, 2013
- Location: The L.C. Bates Museum at Good Will-Hinckley, Hinckley

From May 15 to October 15, 2013, the L.C. Bates Museum at Good Will-Hinckley (Hinckley, Maine) will be hosting a collaborative art exhibition entitled The Gift of the Glacier: The Maine Landscape. Celebrating our great State of Maine, the show will feature works that depict aspects and evidence of the science of Maine’s landscape and geology. From rounded hilltops to rocky slopes and glacial lakes, Maine’s landscape documents the geological evolution of the past. This astounding scenery not only provides the "Mainer" with a beautiful place of residency, but lends itself to be translated into compelling works of art. Thus, The Gift of the Glacier will provide museum visitors with a unique look at how artists interpret a striking landscape created in the Ice Age by a vast slow-moving glacier.
It is therefore fitting that the exhibition will exclusively showcase Maine artists. The L.C. Bates Museum, with a focus on natural history, aims at providing nonconventional approaches to education and, in this particular case, featuring inspiring and accessible art to the rural Central Maine community. It is thus equally fitting that the show will be the result of a collaborative effort between the L.C. Bates Museum staff and two Colby College students, Kayla L. Lewkowicz ‘14 and Veronica L. Vesnaver ’15, who will be curating the exhibition under the supervision of Professor Véronique Plesch. It is their hope that the show will harmoniously combine the contents of the museum with the exhibition’s artworks.
The exhibition, supported in part by the Maine Expansion Arts Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, will be accompanied by related programming, including talks and workshops, designed to promote interest and curiosity about the environment where we live today. Please contact the L.C. Bates Museum at Good Will-Hinckley, 207/238-4250 or lcbates@gwh.org if you have any questions or would like more information about The Gift of the Glacier. The L.C. Bates Museum is located on Rt. 201 in Hinckley, Maine on the campus of Good Will-Hinckley. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and other times by appointment. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.
