About the Artist
Founded in 1982 to explore the interplay of puppets, actors, shadows, movement, and masks, Figures of Speech comprises three main areas of activity: we PERFORM touring productions, we CREATE elegant figures commissioned by or in collaboration with other organizations, and we EDUCATE students of all ages in the art of the puppet.
PERFORM:
Figures of Speech was founded to explore the dramatic interplay of puppets, actors, movement and masks. The company has toured all over the world, while retaining a strong commitment to presenting world-class productions in rural schools and theater venues throughout our home state of Maine.
CREATE:
Our unique approach to theater, and especially to the interaction of actors and puppets on stage, has led to collaborations with other arts organizations such as Portland Stage Company, Heartwood Regional Theater, Portland Symphony Orchestra, and The Freeport Shakespeare Festival.
EDUCATE:
FST offers a full 'menu' of hands-on programs designed to give K-12th grade students a success-oriented approach to literacy, world cultures and team cooperation, while helping schools meet the State Learning Standards with teacher-friendly rubrics and assessment tools. FST also tours to schools of every size and geographical location with award-winning productions that have graced the finest national and international stages. All productions feature extensive packets of curriculum tie-ins and classroom activities to extend the experience well beyond the performance day.
