About the Artist
Joe Hemes is an architect and an artist combining sculpture and light to create 'Illuminated Sculptures'. The scale of his work ranges from small residential work to large Percent for Art projects. The use of color, shadow & light pattern casting and filament projection are some of his specialties. Common industrial materials including: copper, metal cloth, brake lines, fabric, paper, gypsum board tape, kitchen utensils, garden hose, zip-ties and lamp parts are used to create elegant forms and mysterious light displays. His outdoor kinetic sculptures of glass and metal explore movement and light.
He received a Maine Arts Commission Individual Fellowship Grant in 1996. He is a co-artist of the full scale Wyoming Evocation Sculpture at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, ME. He has shown his work in various galleries in the state including; June Fitzpatrick Gallery in Portland, ME and George Marshall Store Gallery in York, ME. Projecting light and color on surrounding surfaces, suggestive of galaxies, captures space beyond its form in mysterious ways.
