About the Artist

John Monroe is a documentary and fine-art photographer based in Portland, Maine. He works in a wide variety of formats and techniques such as black and white & color, daguerreotypes & digital photography.
Monroe has received much attention for his work as a daguerreotypist; he is one of a small handful of practitioners of this difficult and dangerous art. He is also a photographic historian and in 1999 co-curated "First Light: The Dawn of Photography in Maine" an exhibition of Maine-made daguerreotypes at the Center for Maine History in Portland.
Monroe is currently working as a freelance photojournalist and writer, publishing in many local and national publications. His documentary photography of Bath Iron Works was published by HarperCollins in 2000 in the book The Yard by Michael Sanders.
John Monroe frequently donates his photographic services to worthy causes, and is available for teaching, education, public commissions, and community outreach projects.
