About the Artist
Bill Schulz is a native of Portland, Maine. He holds a B.A. in English from Hobart
College (1976), an M.A. in English from the Writing Program of the University of New
Hampshire (1977), and an M.A. in Theological Studies from the Franciscan School of
Theology (2005).
After more than 20 years as a healthcare executive, Bill returned to graduate school in
Berkeley, California to study the life and theology of St. Francis of Assisi. While there,
he developed an interest in the nature of sacred place and has researched the subject
extensively in the mountains and hill towns of central Italy. He recently gave a talk about
this work entitled “A High Place Apart – thinking about sacred place” at Etz Chaim
Synagogue in Portland, Maine.
In “retirement,” Bill founded, Hole In The Head Review
(www.holeintheheadreview.com) - a quarterly online journal of poetry and art that is
attracting an international audience and submissions from new and established poets and
artists including Richard Blanco, Kimberly Cloutier Green, Stuart Kestenbaum, Linda
Aldrich, Marie Harris, Richard Foerster, James Crenner, Kenneth Rosen, Betsy Sholl,
Charles Simic, David Weiss, and Mimi White, plus a host of photographers, painters,
collagists, textile and tattoo artists...even fishing lure-makers. Hole In The Head averages
nearly 3,000 unique visits per month from around the world.
He is a long-time member of The Wicked Good Band and co-author of the band’s book,
The Wicked Good Book. He is an accomplished musician, songwriter, painter, and poet
who strives to embrace life with both head and heart.
Bill’s work has appeared in Poetry publications: The Aurorean, Esthetic Apostle, High
Shelf, The Kansas Quarterly, Nine Mile, New York Quarterly, Nixes Mate, The Seneca
Review and artwork publications: Gulf Stream Magazine, High Shelf and many others.
His collection of poetry, Dog or Wolf, was published by Nine Mile Press in 2022.
