About the Artist

I am a Shakuhachi performer and teacher listened in the Mujuan Dojo of Kyoto Japan. Shakuhachi is an end blown bamboo flute that has woven it’s enigmatic sound through Japanese culture for 1600 years. Honkyoku is a traditional music for Shakuhachi that originated in Buddhist temples and practiced for meditation and clarifying of the mind. This tradition has been passed down from teacher to student for millennia and now has a home in Portland Maine. Toji studies with World renowned Shakuhachi virtuoso Yodo Kurahashi II. Toji has performed Honkyoku and Sankyoku (ensemble music) in both Maine and in Japan. He offers lessons for anyone interested in exploring this rich and beautiful music tradition.
