About the Artist

Jean Kigel specializes in ASIAN BRUSH PAINTING, TRADITIONAL WATERCOLORS and GYOTAKU prints. More than 100 evocative depictions of Maine, Latvia, Japan, and Chinese are available for direct or digital viewing.

Kigel''s rich-hued WATERCOLORS focus on Maine''s working boats and harbors, and native flowers.

Her BRUSH PAINTINGS reflect, in part, the exotica of her travels to China and Japan. They offer glimpses of Kyoto, the Great Wall, the sand dunes and cave art from the Taklimakan Desert, thundering waterfalls from Guizhou Province near Vietnam, canals scenes from Suzhou, and water buffalo from China''s rural rice paddies.

And her GYOTAKU, or Japanese fish prints, pose ecological questions about the depletion of fish stock due to overfishing, and pollution.

Kigel lives and works at her studio-home on Muscongus Bay in Waldoboro. She has exhibited at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C, Bowdoin College, Archipelago Gallery in Rockland, The Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta, the Chocolate Church in Bath, Sea Studio Gallery in Tenants Harbor, Saltwater Gallery in Pemaquid Point, the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset, and Hunter Gallery of Fine Arts in Grafton, VT.

Award-winning member of the Sumi-e Society of America, Kigel has conducted workshops USM in Portland, MECA in Portland, the Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland. Studio tours by appointment. Custom Work. View works at www.jeankigel.com
