About the Artist

Charlotte Middleton is a ceramic artist, writer, and educator based in midcoast Maine. She holds a BFA in Sculpture and Education from Wheaton College (Massachusetts) and an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She completed a two-year apprenticeship with Ellen Shankin in Floyd, Virginia, an experience that profoundly shaped her understanding of craft lineage, discipline, and the ethical commitments of studio practice.
Middleton’s work engages historical and contemporary approaches to surface ornamentation, with a particular interest in the role of women in decorative history and the visual language of scientific illustration. Her research-informed studio practice integrates material investigation with historical inquiry, positioning decoration as a site of meaning, authorship, and labor. Her work has been recognized through numerous fellowships and awards, including a Hixson-Lied School of Art Creative and Activity Grant and the Vreeland Scholarship Award for Meritorious and Creative Work. She has been an artist-in-residence at institutions such as the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona, Italy.
Her ceramic and written work have been featured in Pottery Making Illustrated and Ceramics Monthly. Middleton teaches workshops nationally and is currently building a home studio in midcoast Maine.
