About the Artist
Barbara Burns is a figurative artist working in the ancient medium of handwoven tapestry. She uses this medium to create art for the wall as well as three dimensional, sculptural forms. Her work focuses on women and women's issues, often working in series to more deeply explore her ideas and hone her skills. She is bold with color and interpreting the human form.
“My work is driven by my fascination with the human face and form. The medium of tapestry allows me to create an image with a depth of color and texture I feel I can achieve no other way.”
Burns has received several awards for her tapestry, lectured, curated exhibits and written for textile publications. She has exhibited extensively in the US as well as in England, Slovakia, Poland, Australia and the Czech republic in solo and group shows.
She spent 11 years mentoring with two internationally renowned tapestry experts, Archie Brennan and Susan Martin-Maffei in NY and studied with numerous other tapestry artists including a course of tapestry study at West Dean College in England, New York School of Interior Design and The Fashion Institute in NYC.
