About the Artist
Since arriving in 1999, female lyricist Sontiago is doing her part to bring indie hip-hop to the far-flung reaches of the country by planting her emcee flag in Portland,Maine.
As a former member of the group kNOw complex, she was a two-time winner of Best Hip-Hop Act in the Portland Phoenix Best Music Poll. The group's local popularity landed them as openers for acts like Saul Williams, Spearhead, Jurrassic 5, Blackalicious, RusticOvertones and DJ Q-bert.
After kNOw complex went their separate ways in early 2003, Sontiago partnered withDJ Moshe to create a sound all her own. In addition to writing original lyrics that capture the
female experience, she also orchestrates the song's arrangement. Sontiago's performance
fluctuates between singing, rhyming and spoken word. With her DJ, she has opened for
Floetry, Blackalicious and underground hip-hop legends Atmosphere, and DJ Vadim. In
addition to performing throughout New England, Sontiago has toured Nova Scotia with
jdwalker and Bleubird.
Her skills aren't limited to just the stage, they extend to the classroom as well. She
regularly teaches hip-hop workshops throughout Maine. And it doesn't stop there. As a
hip-hop ambassador, Sontiago actively books, organizes and promotes local and national
hip-hop hip-hop shows for venues in Portland.
