About the Artist

Richard Getchell, or "Rick" as his family and friends call him, is a tribal member of the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians, located in the Northern part of Maine. He is a former Chief of his tribe, serving as one of the youngest Chiefs to be elected in the United States. Rick was inspired by his appreciation for Native American crafts and art to create his own authentic work. He paints with acrylic on canvas or slate and captures Mother Earth's gifts of nature, water and animals. Featured at his booths and on his website are other Native crafts such as baskets, jewelry, and dreamcatchers-hand made and crafted by Native people. In addition to his painting and work for a tribal Head Start program, he introduces the Micmac culture to local schools and daycare centers. His presentations feature Micmac artifacts and Native drumming with participation from the audience.
