About the Artist
Chief Oscar Ogugua Mokeme has been educating the communities of Maine and New England about African art and culture and issues of diversity since 1989. A titled elder within the Igbo culture of Nigeria as well as a performance specialist of Igbo masquerade, Oscar''s work with children and adults combines hands on learning with African objects. Oscar has offered a variety of workshops on Africa in the past, ranging from mask making, making power objects and toys, painting with sand, to creative dancing. All workshops combine story telling (often with drama and literature) and are highlighted with a masquerade performance, where an African mask is brought to life for the group. An experience that lasts a life time!
