About the Artist
Barry grew up on the Penobscot River living and learning his culture from his grandmother and other tribal elders. He travels throughout Maine sharing firsthand knowledge of Maine's indigenous people. His goal is to dissipate stereotypes and misconceptions of Native Americans. Barry brings into the classroom a birchbark wigwam and canoe, moose hide drum, baskets, deer hides, materials for bow and drill firemaking, edible and medicinal plants. He runs camp-outs and workshops that teach people native skills. Barry is the current Governor of the Penobscots.
