About the Artist
Rootsy, raise-the-rafters gospel music for everyone! Rock My Soul is a 25-member, nondenominational gospel choir whose mission is to bring diverse communities and individuals together through gospel music. Through performance, charitable outreach, and other community-building activities, we seek to uplift, entertain and educate. Although we have a lot of spirit, we are not a religious organization. We come from many different backgrounds and have in common a deep appreciation of and respect for gospel music''s tremendous impact on our history and culture.
Rock My Soul''s repertoire includes songs ranging from the Negro spirituals of the 1700s to the contemporary rootsy gospel of Ruthie Foster. Along the way, listeners are also treated to selections by blues-based gospel ""grandfather"" Blind Willie Johnson, the traditional southern gospel of Bill Monroe and Alfred E. Brumley, and lesser-known gems by gospel greats such as the Davis Sisters and the Angelic Gospel Singers.
In every age, from the time of slavery down to the present moment, when repressed individuals and disempowered communities have needed sustenance, gospel music has been there as a source of strength, hope, and encouragement. It is our hope that by educating our audiences about the rich history and various traditions of gospel music, and by telling the stories behind the songs, we will all gain a much deeper appreciation for the powerful and positive impact gospel music has had--and still has--on us as individuals and as a society.
Rock My Soul is sponsored by the Diversified Faith Gospel Project, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation registered in the state of Maine.
