About the Artist
Dorette Amell works in an imaginative representational style that references art historical and religious paintings as well as popular culture and folk art. Amell's work was included in the 2008 Center for Maine Contemporary Art Biennial.
The artist works in a variety of media and her larger work often includes the frame as an extension of the piece.
The artist often explores the use of juxtapositions as typified in "New Views of Mount Fuji" an ongoing series of over 100 works in a variety of media. Juxtapositions of the commonplace are used as a device to refocus the viewer's attention, recalling each image and funding a greater awareness of current reality.
An accomplished muralist, Amell was a 1996 Percent for Art recipient.
Amell has also completed a number of murals for York Hospital in York, Maine in common areas and treatment rooms.
