Local Stories Project

About the Artist

The Local Stories Project is an innovative multidisciplinary mural project on local history. Students conduct primary research on local history, then design and create a permanent mural and performance piece based on themes developed from this research. Visiting artists work in close collaboration with classroom and art teachers, and local historical organizations. Students present the completed mural and the performance piece to the community in a celebratory unveiling.

Artist/designer Laurie Downey coordinates this project, which has been conducted in a number of southern Maine public elementary schools over the past ten years.
