About the Artist
Jeff has been a visual artist for 45 years receiving a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1974. For about 30 years Jeff's focus has been book design and the book arts, receiving a book art MFA in 1984 from the Graduate School, The University of Alabama Institute for the Book Arts. Since 2002 Jeff has operated the small literary press Deerbrook Editions, publishing authors from Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Massachusetts. Since 1982 Jeff has designed books, taught design, printing, and book binding such places as The Graduate School in Alabama, The Art Department in Athens GA, and Portland School of Art now Maine College of Art. Jeff worked at The Anthoensen Press before opening his studio in Portland, ME (1985-1995) , the Muse Press, where he won design and publishing awards from the Arts Commission and Writers and Publishers Alliance Maine Chapbook Series, and in this studio did printing and fine book binding for a variety of clients including The Bowdoin Museum of Art, The Portland Public Library, The Vinal Haven Press and Marlboro Gallery, Maine State Library, Maine State Museum, as well as photographers, collectors and ad agencies. His work was exhibited at the Portland Museum of Art in 1997. Muse Press is now closed, but Jeff continues to design books, and do fine book binding and limited editions.
