About the Artist
Since the age of fifteen Sarah Hewitt has created visual works in many medias: photography, painting, drawing, etchings and sculpting. Her works today question our perceptions of beauty, safety, and delves into honest animalism deeply rooted in ourselves. Sarah's work is exhibited around the country, has garnered many awards, grants, residencies, and is frequently featured in international and regional art magazines. Throughout the years many teachers and artists have influenced and supported Sarah's artistic practice. No artist stands alone as an island. Among the most influential artistic influences are Al DeCredico (RISD); Barnaby Fitzgerald, Bill Komodore, Charles DeBus (SMU); teachings and readings while at the St. John's College of Santa Fe; Katharine Cobey, Tracy Krumm (Haystack Mountain School of Crafts); and innumerable artists worldwide. As well as being a `maker', Sarah is the principal of a design/consulting business. For over eight years Straitjacket Design LLC has provided graphic and web design, development, promotion, and consulting to artists, galleries, small businesses and non-profits across the country.
