About the Artist

The Monhegan Artists' Residency supports the creative growth of dedicated Maine artists by providing them time and space in which to work free of interruption and constraint in the inspiring environment of Monhegan Island.

While Monhegan has for over 150 years attracted artists from across the country and around the world, it is increasingly difficult for Maine artists to find affordable housing for an extended visit on the island. To this end, the Monhegan Artists' Residency provides free comfortable living quarters, studio space, a stipend, and time for Maine visual artists to explore, experiment, and develop their art.

Three residencies are offered each summer: two 5-week sessions (early May through the end of June and end of August through the first of October) and one 2-week session (July) for a Maine artist who teaches grades K-12 and thus is not free in the spring or fall.

Quality of work is the primary criterion for selection. Artists are selected through an application process by a jury of art professionals. Artists receive a stipend of $150 per week. There is no requirement to produce a body of work, although the residency should be viewed as an outstanding opportunity for artistic development.
