About the Artist
I am a free-lance dance educator, choreographer, and performing artist. I have served as Vice-President for the Dance Division of the Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MAHPERD) in the past and annually serve as an artist in residence for a variety of schools/organizations around the state. I have many years of experience as a performer and have taught dance classes at venues such as Foothills Arts Center, University of Maine at Farmington, the New England College Dance Festival, Thornton Academy Dance Festival, and the Bates College ArtSmart program. I was originally trained in Modern Dance and specialize in "New Dance," including improvisational performance, Contact Improvisation and Authentic Movement, and multi-media/interdisciplinary work, including integrating dance with voice, visual art, video, and writing. I believe I have developed a unique expertise in teaching creative movement for grades K-12 over the years and am highly skilled at providing access to dance for adults who consider themselves "non-dancers." I am very interested in grass-roots, community-based art programs which allow people from all walks of life to find their voice and express themselves through art-making. I believe that Dance is a way of learning about the world through direct physical experience and that it is a vehicle for creating community, celebrating diversity, exploring creativity and mindfulness, and invoking and honoring authentic physical expressions of the self.
