About the Artist
An internationally recognized lettering and book artist, Nancy Ruth Leavitt creates contemporary illuminated manuscript books filled with lettering, poetry, and colorful painting. Her work encompasses the multi-disciplinary studies of art, literature, and history.
Nancy has been teaching the art of the book since 1985, and she enjoys involving students of all ages. Nancy offers lectures and gives demonstrations and presentations on her work and the development of the manuscript book.
Nancy's work may be found in public and private collections including: the Houghton Library at Harvard, Cambridge, the Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She is the Calligraphy Correspondent for the national chapter of the Guild of Book Workers. She has received several grants from the Maine Arts Commission for research into the history of her craft including the collection and cutting of writing quills.
