  • February 08, 2022

Application Deadline: Tuesday, March 8, 2022

Budget Description: Artists will be reimbursed up to $250 to cover the cost of supplies.

Project Details:

The Augusta Downtown Alliance (ADA) seeks proposals from a diverse group of artists for a community wide art project to bring beauty, interest and create economic impact within our beautiful downtown. Artists will be asked to “adopt '' one of 25 fiberglass sturgeon to be installed in locations around the downtown this summer. The sturgeon measure 4’4” long and weigh 40-50 pounds each. Artists are invited to create 2Dimensional artwork on their sturgeon through any chosen medium that will withstand the elements, such as exterior house paint or resin, as well as interest of admirers who may want to touch the sturgeon. Please refrain from including any 3Dimensional aspects that could be pulled off or removed from the artwork. Artists will pick up their sturgeon at the beginning of April and must complete their work within a six week period to allow for installation of the pieces by the beginning of June.

The ADA would like these sturgeon to be an uplifting addition to our community. We see this art project as an opportunity for our community to come together to share in the fun of appreciating art. The artwork created on the sturgeon should reflect our commitment as a community to uplift each other and come together. Imagery which reflects the area’s past, present and future is encouraged. Please do not include imagery that is political or religious and the work must include imagery and content that is appropriate for all audiences.

Selected artists will be featured across the City of Augusta and Augusta Downtown Alliance’s social media channels and will be highlighted on maps created of the sturgeon locations which will be available at several hotels, the Chamber of Commerce and other destinations within the area. The sturgeon will be on display seasonally for 2 years. At the end of the display period they will be auctioned, with proceeds benefiting future art projects in downtown Augusta. When the sturgeon is offered at auction and sold, the first $500 will go to the artist, pending sales above $1,000. If the artist received any expenses or materials, that amount will be deducted from the $500. Artists may choose to donate their fee or any portion of their fee.
