MIXMASTER 2023 Juried Members Exhibition:

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Waterbury, CT… The Mattatuck Museum’s annual MIXMASTER exhibition seeks to discover and recognize the talents of the Museum’s artists members working in New England and the Tri-state region. Initiated to support and recognize contemporary art, MIXMASTER provides an opportunity for established and emerging artists to debut their most recent work.

Current Mattatuck Museum membership at any level is required at time of submission. MIXMASTER is open to all Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont resident artists 18 years and over. Original works accepted in all media. Work submitted must have been executed in the past three years and not previously exhibited in a Connecticut Museum. A $20.00 entry fee will be charged for each submitted work. Up to three works per artist may be submitted. All entrants must have a current Mattatuck Museum membership to be eligible to submit work. Artists can learn more about MIXMASTER at the Museum’s website, mattmuseum.org, and submit entries on mixmaster2023.artcall.org.

Submissions will be judged this year by Elizabeth Thompson Kirkpatrick, Director at Anita Rogers Gallery in downtown NYC. She has been with the gallery since it opened in 2016. Prior to joining the Anita Rogers Gallery team, she worked at Bertrand Delacroix Gallery in SoHo for five years. Elizabeth was raised in New York City and Bermuda. She received her bachelor’s degree in art history and French language at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Anita Rogers Gallery represents a diverse roster of emerging, mid-career, and posthumous artists whose work speaks to the contemporary landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries. The gallery, active in both primary and secondary markets, strives to cultivate the careers of exceptional painters and sculptors, both figurative and abstract, who have earned their place in the contemporary art market.

Submissions will be open on Friday, October 7 and the deadline for submissions will be Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Exhibition: Sunday, January 15 – Sunday, February 19, 2023

Reception and Awards: Sunday, January 22, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Prizes: First Prize: $500 and a solo show with the Museum (September 24 – December 3, 2023)

Second Prize: $300

Third Prize: $200

ABOUT THE MATTATUCK MUSEUM

Located in the heart of downtown Waterbury’s architectural district, the Mattatuck Museum is a vibrant destination, known locally and regionally as a community-centered institution of American art and history. The collections at The MATT span the history of American art from the colonial era to the present day with special strengths in Naugatuck Valley history and Connecticut artists, as well as artists from around the world representing the diversity of our community. The collection includes more than 8,000 objects including paintings, unique works on paper, photography, and sculpture.

Over the past two years, the Mattatuck has undergone a $9 million renovation project to reimagine the Museum while continuing to be a welcoming, inclusive, stimulating, and enriching community anchor. The “new” Mattatuck Museum, designed by Ann Beha Architects, includes an extensive 14,000 square foot renovation to the existing space and an addition of almost 7,000 square feet to enhance public access, educational programming, collections storage, and exhibitions.

The Museum is operated with support from the Connecticut Department of Economic & Community Development/CT Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  The Museum is a founding member of the Consortium of Connecticut Art Museums and is a member of the Connecticut Art Trail, a group of 21 world-class museums and historic sites (ctarttrail.org).

The Mattatuck is open Monday-Saturday from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. with additional hours on Thursday nights until 7:00 p.m. Walk-in visitors are welcome! Visitors who prefer contactless payment may call and reserve their ticket ahead of time.

The safety and health of visitors and staff is the highest priority at the Mattatuck Museum. With the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) within the United States, the Museum is keeping up to date with all CDC health-related plans and procedures.

Although the CDC and CT have dropped the mask mandate for fully vaccinated people, those not yet fully vaccinated and children under 12 are required to wear masks while visiting the Museum. Mattatuck staff will continue to wear masks to protect themselves and those not yet vaccinated for the foreseeable future. Free, disposable masks are available at the Welcome Desk. We invite you to keep your mask on during your visit for your comfort and the comfort of others.
