In Philip Frey’s solo exhibition “Rejoicing in Color” the artist continues his exploration of the landscape, coastal Maine and interior spaces reminiscent of summer houses that Frey remembers from childhood. Frey has established himself as a leader amongst Maine landscape painters, known for his bold approach to color, dynamic and intentional brushwork and the interplay he creates between representation and the abstract. Philip Frey paints from life, preferring to work from his direct perceptions of his subject matter, reacting to the light, shadow and compositional elements he discovers and giving license to his emotional response to the scene. He paints with a mindfulness learned through his study of Buddhism, and a “oneness with process” that allows him to simplify the landscape, or interior space with bold broad brushstrokes and assertive areas of color. Viewers experience the familiar in his scenes of the landscape and interiors but then enjoy the fluid shift into abstraction in each painting.

Philip Frey holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Syracuse University and has his studio in downeast Maine. His work is shown nationally and the artist has had many solo exhibitions including one at The Zillman Art museum at the University of Maine in Bangor. His work has been featured in numerous publications including Art of Acadia, Painting of Portland, Art New England and The Maine Sunday Telegram. In 2018 a book titled “Philip Frey: Here and Now” by art critics and historians Carl Little and Daniel Kay was published. Philip Frey is also a highly regarded painting teacher.
