PhoPa Gallery, 132 Washington Avenue, Portland, Maine seeking interns!

Get involved with Maine Media Workshops!

Maine Media Workshops+College is proud to announce a new collaboration between Maine Media Workshops + College, photographer Jon Edwards, and independent curator Bruce Brown. PhoPa Gallery in Portland, Maine is devoted to exhibiting photographs and works on paper by Maine related artists.

MMW + C and PhoPa are grateful for the support of volunteers and interns throughout the year.  To thank our volunteers and interns, Maine Media Workshops + College has the following policy and points system.

Policy for Interns:  MMW + C is delighted to work with college and graduate students who are currently pursuing a degree in photography or related field, and are passionate about the arts.  Interns are those individuals who are receiving credit from their institution for professional experience. Interns assist with various tasks including but not limited to conversing with patrons, sales of art, inventory keeping, and marketing outreach. In addition, interns will assist in the organization and production of gallery openings and talks, assisting in the setting up and taking down of gallery exhibits as well as participating in any opening receptions.

Interns receiving credits are not eligible to participate in the point system.  Generally these internships are for 10 hours per week over a three month time period. The Gallery Manager serves as the mentor for these internships for credit.

Policy for Volunteers:  MMW + C is very grateful to individuals in the Portland and Rockport areas who have offered to volunteer their time to the galleries.  Volunteers may be involved in covering gallery hours (including opening and closing) which would include welcoming visitors to the galleries, speaking about the show and artist’s work on exhibit, assisting with sales of artwork or other merchandise, assisting with facilitating gallery talks and opening receptions.  Volunteers with specific skills or interests may also participate in other aspects of the gallery operations including prepping the gallery for new installations, or assisting with the installation of art work.

We appreciate volunteers committing to a regular schedule.

Volunteers are eligible to participate in the point system.  For this, volunteers will be asked to keep time cards which will be signed off on by the Gallery Manager, VP of Academic Affairs or Business Manager.  All hours must be accounted for in order to qualify for points.

Points are valued at 1 point per hour volunteered (example, five hours =  five points.) Each point is worth $1.00.

Points may be used in several ways:

• Once a 200 points have been earned, they may be applied towards a course (tuition only, for a Rockport workshop.)

• If a credit of points earned equals half the tuition cost of a course, Volunteers may request to be considered as the Teaching Assistant for the course.*  If selected to TA, the balance of the tuition cost will be waived.

* Some courses require assistants with specialized skills or knowledge, so approval of this is by consent of the (Photography or Filmmaking) Program Manager.

• Points (of any value) may be used at any time towards the purchase of MMW + C logoed merchandise (at staff rates), faculty work donated for the scholarship fund, or work donated by students in the Artist to Artist exchange.

Maine Media Workshops + College and Pho Pa Gallery strive to provide a safe study and work environment. In support of its efforts, MMW requires a background check to be completed by its new employees, interns and volunteers. Individuals will be asked to consent to such check prior to finalization of employment or volunteering. Failure to consent to a background check will disqualify the individual from employment or volunteering. Additionally, an individual who fails to provide the necessary information or who provides false or misleading information may also be disqualified from further consideration. Later discovery of false or misleading information related to the background check may subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
