The Board of Trustees of the Maine State Music Theatre today announces the resignation of Steven C. Peterson as Executive Director. Stephanie Dupal, the organization’s General Manager, will oversee operations at MSMT while the Trustees undertake a nation-wide search for a new Executive Director.

According to MSMT Board President, Don Gerrish, “Steve has brought to MSMT a combined business and artistic leadership that has allowed us to maintain financial stability, and also attract talented theatre professionals to Brunswick season after season.”

Since its founding by Victoria Crandall in 1959, MSMT has grown and adapted to changes in both audience needs and the theatre business. Mr. Peterson’s eight-year tenure was marked by successful conclusion of a capital campaign for the purchase and renovation of administrative offices in downtown Brunswick, celebration of the organization’s fiftieth anniversary, weathering of a country-wide economic recession, acquisition and expansion of a now-thriving costume rental business, and MSMT’s continuing to fulfill its ongoing mission to entertain, educate, and enrich lives with a wide variety of high-quality musical theatre productions.

While overseeing operations at MSMT, Mr. Peterson also found time to pursue his acting career, with a show-stopping turn as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray during the 2007 season. Mr. Peterson is leaving MSMT to pursue other opportunities, including a return to the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where last November he appeared in Hairspray, and where this November he will appear in Singing in the Ra
