Pushing the boundaries of dance on ice as a performing art form, Maine based Ice Dance International enters its tenth anniversary season creating dynamic new ensemble ice dances by the world’s best choreographers, Rohene Ward and Garrett Smith. The pieces will be performed September 26-29 in cities across New England including Portland and Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; and Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Ice Dance International is honored to create new company pieces by champion skater, Rohene Ward and ballet dancer Garrett Smith. Mr. Ward is the 4 time Professional Skaters Association’s Choreographer of the year, and current choreographer for US Champion Jason Brown and World Champion Kaori Sakamoto.
Mr. Smith has created and staged his choreography for some of the most elite dance companies in the world including Teatro Allo Scala, The Marinsky Ballet, The Bolshoi Ballet, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, New York City Ballet, Houston Ballet and national de l’Opera de Bordeaux. He is currently resident choreographer for Vitacca Ballet. His recent creation for the company, Hypnotic Forces, was selected by Pointe Magazine as one of the 12 standout performances of 2023.
IDI’s presentation of New Works follows a 3-week residency in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine where the performing arts ice dance company partners with Monson Arts and the Piscataquis County Ice Arena. The performances include solos and duets skated by IDI company members in addition to IDI Artistic Director, Douglas Webster’s, Nocturnes, a piece created during IDI’s first residency in 2015 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Nocturnes was showcased on IDI’s public television specials that aired nationally on PBS stations in 2018.
New Works will be audiences first opportunity see the premier pieces before the IDI company’s tenth anniversary United States tour in March 2025. Webster states: “expect to see dynamic, athletic world class skating; innovative partnering; and ensemble skating performances that move beyond the world of sport."
