Internship Questions header image

An internship interview will help an organization decide whether they want to hire a particular intern for a position, and also help the intern applicant decide whether or not they want to accept the position. Following are some questions that may help guide the process:

Questions

  • Does the internship offer a salary, credit, both, neither? When will the internship begin and when will it end? What are the weekly/daily time commitments to the internship? How flexible is the internship schedule?
  • What is the previous work or intern experience of the applicant?Who will supervise the intern and what will the supervision be like? How often will the intern and supervisor meet to discuss performance? What is the typical "chain of command" in the organization? What are the evaluation expectations of the internship?
  • What skills are expected for the internship? What are the major projects and responsibilities of the intern? What skills will an intern gain or develop from this opportunity? How much training is provided? What percentage of time will be spent on clerical work (photocopying, data entry, etc.)? Will the intern be invited to sit in on department meetings and conferences? Will the intern rotate between departments?
  • What is the expected progression of advancement if one were to make this a career? What are the time demands that accompany this type of work? What are the physical demands that accompany this type of work? How much pressure/stress will the intern experience on this job?
